Foreign investors pour back into Taiwan stocks, buying chips and dumping panel makers
Taiwan stocks surged to a record close as foreign investors staged one of their biggest buying days ever, a strong positive for Taiwan's chip sector and a negative for panel makers and banks.
- The market jumped nearly 2% to a new high above 47,000 after the Fed's rate decision cleared away uncertainty.
- Foreign investors bought a net NT$87 billion, the fifth-largest single-day haul on record, with all three major institutional groups buying together.
- Money flowed into memory and semiconductor names, led by Powerchip, Winbond, Nanya Tech, and UMC, which also topped the day's trading volume.
- Panel makers AU Optronics and Innolux were dumped hard, and banks like Taiwan Business Bank and E.Sun Financial were also sold down.
- Interest is shifting from GPUs to custom AI chips, pushing chip designer Global Unichip to a record high, while the Taiwan dollar also strengthened as foreign money came back.
Outlook: With Fed uncertainty out of the way and foreign money returning, Taiwan's AI and chip supply chain looks set to keep leading the rally in the near term.
