A moderate quake struck eastern Taiwan early Monday morning, with shaking felt across much of the island but no damage reported so far.

• The quake hit at 3:21 a.m. in Wanrong township, Hualien County, at a magnitude of 4.7.
• It was shallow — about 17 kilometers deep — and centered roughly 55 kilometers southwest of Hualien city.
• The strongest shaking, level 4 on Taiwan's scale, was felt in Hualien and Nantou counties.
• Lighter shaking reached Taitung, Chiayi, Tainan, Yunlin, Kaohsiung, Taichung, Yilan, Changhua and Miaoli.

Outlook: Aftershocks are possible in the coming days, though a quake of this size rarely causes serious damage.
