West Oahu recovery continues after Lowell's flooding

Sep 11, 2026

Residents on the west side of Oahu are still digging out four days after storm surge from Lowell pushed into homes, a slow and costly cleanup for families along Farrington Highway.

  • Storm surge crossed Farrington Highway and flooded driveways, garages, and ground floors with sand, mud, and debris.
  • One property shared by nine residents only got back to something like normal this week, after days of hauling out waste.
  • A public restroom along the highway is buried in sand and closed off.
  • Friends and neighbors are doing much of the cleanup themselves rather than waiting on outside help.

Outlook: Cleanup will drag on for days more, with some homes and public facilities on the west side likely to stay damaged or closed well beyond that.
