Hawaii marked 25 years since the September 11 attacks with ceremonies across the islands, honoring the nearly 3,000 killed — including nine people with ties to the state.

• A rusted steel beam from one of the World Trade Center towers anchored the main ceremony as a physical reminder of the day.
• Nine victims with Hawaii connections were named and remembered, among them Michael Collins, Patricia Connor, Georgine Corrigan, Richard Keane, David Laychak, Richard Lee and Christine Snyder.
• Dozens of firefighters in full gear climbed the Koko Crater Trail to honor first responders who died in the attacks and afterward.
• A bell tolled on Ford Island at Pearl Harbor for the 343 New York firefighters killed at the World Trade Center, and Maui's fire department held its own tribute.
• A display of hundreds of boots honored those who went to war after 9/11, with about 100 new pairs added each year.

Outlook: With many of today's first responders too young to remember 2001, the focus is shifting to passing the story to a generation that did not live through it.
