Apple's foldable iPhone Duo and Goldman Sachs' 11 Taiwan supply-chain buy calls
Apple's new foldable phone is set to spark a big upgrade wave, and that's good news for the Taiwanese companies that build its parts.
- The iPhone Duo sold out within minutes at phone shops after launching alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models.
- Goldman Sachs expects first-year shipments of 14 million, and up to 35 million if demand runs hot, partly because the Duo undercuts Samsung's rival foldable on price.
- Eleven Taiwanese suppliers got "buy" ratings across chips, assembly, hinges, boards, cooling and optics — with Foxconn and Nan Ya PCB flagged as the strongest picks.
- Hinge maker Shin Zu Shing is the most exposed name, with Apple set to make up most of its revenue; TSMC stays locked in as the only real option for top-end chips.
- The wider market is nervous: US inflation stayed high in August, a Fed rate hike is widely expected next week, and Taiwan's central bank meets on the 17th under growing pressure to follow.
Outlook: Parts orders should ramp hard into the launch, but stocks may stay choppy until the Fed's rate decision clears the air.
