Shipping rates rise for a seventh straight week, Southeast Asia routes top $1,000

Sep 11, 2026

Ocean shipping rates out of Shanghai are still climbing, which is good for shipping lines but means higher costs for exporters and importers.

  • The main Shanghai export shipping rate index rose again, its seventh straight weekly gain.
  • The biggest jump was on routes from the Far East to Southeast Asia, where rates surged 13% and broke past $1,000 per container.
  • Routes to the U.S. West and East Coasts also kept rising, though more slowly.
  • Europe and the Mediterranean went the other way, with Mediterranean rates falling sharply.

Outlook: Short-haul Asia routes look set to stay tight while Europe-bound rates keep softening.
