A cross-camp radio interview in Taiwan has unexpectedly turned into a public discussion about democratic tolerance, with an overall positive tone.

• Puma Shen, the Democratic Progressive Party's candidate for Taipei mayor, gave a radio interview to veteran television producer Wang Wei-chung, despite the vast gap between their political backgrounds.
• Former Executive Yuan minister without portfolio Chang Ching-sen initially criticised Wang for having used variety shows in earlier years to turn the dangwai movement and its politicians into a joke, calling it a form of "cultural violence."
• He subsequently changed tack and offered praise, saying that a willingness to walk into the other side's programme and a willingness to open the door meant both sides had stepped outside their own echo chambers.
• He said Taiwan's greatest progress over the past forty years is that people can sit down and hear each other out, and that power can change hands.
• He cautioned younger generations against carrying labelling, pile-ons and blocking over to social media platforms, saying that merely digitises the intolerance of an earlier era.
