TSMC's foundry market share hits a new high as Samsung slips
TSMC now controls nearly three-quarters of the world's contract chipmaking, great news for TSMC shareholders and bad news for Samsung, which is close to losing second place.
- Global foundry revenue hit a record in the second quarter, up about 12% from the quarter before.
- TSMC's share climbed to 72.5%, another record, widening its lead.
- Samsung's share fell to under 6%, with China's SMIC right behind it at 5.4%.
- AI and high-performance computing chips are still in short supply, and demand for power-management and other supporting chips is rising too.
- TVs, PCs and laptops are being stocked up early, tightening capacity for older, cheaper chipmaking too.
Outlook: Foundry revenue should climb again this quarter as chip prices rise, flagship phones enter their build season, and AI platforms ramp up.
