The Iran conflict is escalating on two fronts at once — Iranian missiles damaged American warplanes in Jordan, and Houthi gains in Yemen are choking Saudi oil exports — which is bad news for drivers, the Gulf, and Trump.

• Iranian missiles hit an air base in Jordan, tearing a wing off an A-10 and lightly damaging eight F-15s, with more than 30 Patriot interceptors fired in defense.
• The strike landed far from Iran, showing US bases well outside the Gulf are now in range, and newer, harder-to-intercept missiles are getting through.
• Houthi fighters seized the Red Sea port of Mocha and an island near the Bab el-Mandeb strait, making their shipping blockade far easier to enforce.
• Saudi oil output crashed in August to its weakest level since 1990 as the blockade scrambled shipping routes and attacks damaged infrastructure.
• Oil is now around $105 a barrel and diesel prices are spiking, with the cost of the missiles and damaged planes running into hundreds of millions of dollars.

Outlook: Trump says the war ends right after the midterms, but Vance and Rubio are privately warning it could drag on to the end of his term, and gas prices are likely to keep climbing.
