A Honolulu-area conservation group is opening its land restoration work to the public this Saturday, an easy way for residents and visitors to help cut wildfire risk.

• Protect and Preserve, which bought 330 acres in Pia Valley, is hosting a free morning workday open to all ages.
• The work is pulling out invasive plants and putting native ones in the ground — the group has planted 16,000 already with about 100 volunteers a month.
• Invasive growth is a wildfire hazard, so clearing it lowers fire risk for the surrounding area.
• Organizers pitch it as low-effort and beginner-friendly: a short talk, some planting, long sleeves and pants recommended.
• Sign-ups go through the Protect and Preserve website; the group meets at 7:30 a.m. in the valley and carpools to the site.

Outlook: This is the first of a planned quarterly series, with future outings expected to cover coastal cleanups and coral reef work.
