• They framed the effort as carrying out the late Shinzo Abe's wish for a strong Japan-Taiwan relationship and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
• Lai pointed to China's military pressure, gray-zone harassment, and cross-border crackdowns as a growing threat across the Taiwan Strait and the East and South China Seas.
• Lai also asked for deeper cooperation on chips, AI, quantum computing, drones, and robots — pulling trade and tech into the security conversation.
• The lawmakers' group formed only in June and already sent a delegation, a sign Taiwan is climbing the agenda in Japan's parliament.

Outlook: Expect draft legislation and more high-level Japan-Taiwan contacts to be floated in Tokyo, along with angry pushback from Beijing.
