With just over two months to go until Taiwan's local elections, the Democratic Progressive Party has unveiled a heavyweight campaign line-up in Taichung, giving the Green camp's prospects a shot in the arm.

  • Former President Tsai Ing-wen travelled south to Taichung and formally donned the vest of honorary chair of Ho Hsin-chun's campaign headquarters.
  • Ho Hsin-chun is a sitting legislator and the DPP's candidate for mayor of Taichung.
  • Legislative Yuan Deputy Speaker Tsai Chi-chang is serving as chair of the campaign headquarters; Tsai Ing-wen said she agreed only after he declared, "If you don't come, I won't do it."
  • Tsai Ing-wen gave Tsai Chi-chang a task on the spot: don't come and see her unless he wins. The remark drew laughter from the audience.
  • Tsai Ing-wen is also serving as campaign headquarters chair for New Taipei mayoral candidate Su Chiao-hui, making her a leading campaigner for the Green camp.

Outlook: With just over two months left in the campaign, Tsai Ing-wen is expected to make frequent appearances in key battlegrounds such as Taichung and New Taipei to drum up votes.
