TSMC co-chief operating officer Chin Yung-pei was named an academician of Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute, a positive marker for Taiwan's chip industry and its talent pipeline.

  • Chin credited ITRI's early training and technology transfers with giving TSMC the people it needed to get started.
  • After nearly 40 years in chips, he said world-class manufacturing and research have to advance together, with no shortcuts.
  • He joined ITRI's electronics lab in 1982 and moved to TSMC in 1987 as one of its first employees.
  • He thanked founder Morris Chang for creating the contract chipmaking model that reshaped the industry.

Outlook: Chin says he will keep working with TSMC's suppliers and partners on manufacturing strength and long-term sustainability.
