Taiwan stocks surge as institutions buy a record-scale amount

Sep 07, 2026

Taiwan's stock market jumped sharply, with big institutional investors piling in at nearly the heaviest pace ever — very good news for Taiwanese shareholders, especially in chips and AI-linked parts.

  • The main index rose over 775 points to about 47,326, with trading volume exploding to record-like levels.
  • Big institutions bought a combined NT$113.9 billion, the second-largest single-day buying ever; foreign investors alone bought NT$88.3 billion, their fourth-largest ever.
  • Foreign money went into display maker AU Optronics, chipmakers PSMC and UMC, plus several actively managed Taiwan ETFs.
  • UMC hit its daily limit after strong August sales, and MediaTek also locked limit-up on word that Nvidia and other AI partners took most of its $3.9 billion convertible bond.
  • Away from stocks, attacks on Russian refineries and Middle East tension have squeezed fuel oil supply, pushing Singapore marine fuel prices up 76% and threatening higher shipping costs.

Outlook: Apple's September 9 launch event and continued AI demand should keep Taiwanese chip and component stocks in focus, though foreign investors were net sellers just last week, so the buying spree may not last.
