Taiwan stocks back above 47,000 as chip makers lead rally
Asian markets jumped on Monday, with Taiwan, Korea and Japan all rallying hard on chip strength — good news for tech investors, at least for now.
- Taiwan's index climbed back over 47,000, up more than 650 points, led by TSMC and UMC.
- Korea rose over 3.5% as Samsung and SK Hynix surged; Japan's Nikkei added close to 1,300 points.
- The trigger was a big jump in US chip stocks on Friday, which lifted TSMC's US-listed shares.
- Wall Street itself was mixed — the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq all slipped as strong US jobs data raised worries the Fed could raise interest rates again.
Outlook: Chip demand is carrying Asian markets higher, but the rally is exposed if the Fed turns more hawkish.
