Negotiations between Taiwan's opposition Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People's Party (TPP) over cooperation in the Zhubei mayoral election in Hsinchu County have broken down, with the two parties trading accusations — welcome news for the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

• The two parties failed to agree on a candidate for Zhubei mayor, and their cooperation has been declared off.
• The KMT pinned the shift in the electoral outlook on the DPP, saying Zhubei was never within the scope of Blue-White cooperation in the first place.
• DPP legislator Lin Chun-hsien hit back, calling this a pretext by the KMT because it cannot justify itself to the TPP.
• The TPP invoked party discipline to bar its members from campaigning for KMT candidate Hsu Hsin-ying, a move criticised as merely for show to its supporters.
• Lin Chun-hsien suggested the TPP simply refuse to cooperate with the KMT anywhere in Taiwan, so the other side can taste the cost of division.

Outlook: If the Blue-White rift widens to other counties and cities, integration among the opposition ahead of next year's local elections may prove even harder to negotiate, with the DPP the biggest beneficiary.
