Li Si-chuan plans to invite Taipei and New Taipei mayors to campaign with him; Su Chiao-hui responds
The New Taipei City mayoral race is heating up, with the DPP's Su Chiao-hui responding coolly to her KMT rival's campaign-support arrangements, in a contest that appears evenly matched.
- Su Chiao-hui said every camp has its own rhythm, and she is focused solely on pressing ahead in her own direction.
- The KMT's Li Si-chuan plans to invite Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an and New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih to appear alongside him next week.
- Su Chiao-hui opened her campaign headquarters in Banqiao the previous day, with Lai Ching-te and Tsai Ing-wen both attending in support and more than 20,000 people turning out in heavy rain.
- The youth vote is seen as decisive, and Su Chiao-hui stressed that she was the first to put forward youth policies, covering marriage, childbirth and housing, entrepreneurship and employment, and psychological counselling.
- She clarified that the gesture seen in photos from the event was not her wiping away tears, but simply adjusting her glasses because of the heavy rain.
Outlook: With more than two months to go until the November 28 vote, both sides will step up efforts to win over young voters and local factions.
