Guatemalan white shrimp exports to Taiwan jump

Sep 06, 2026

Guatemala is selling a lot more shrimp to Taiwan, good news for Guatemalan fishermen and for Taiwanese restaurants stocking up for the autumn seafood season.

  • White shrimp exports from Guatemala to Taiwan grew almost 28% last quarter.
  • Shrimp is now Guatemala's third biggest farm and fish export to Taiwan, behind only sugar and coffee.
  • A free trade deal between the two countries cuts tariffs, and Taiwan is the second largest buyer of Guatemalan seafood after the EU.
  • Guatemalan producers added digital certificates and better tracking to meet Taiwan's food safety rules and speed up shipping.
  • Taiwanese seafood distributor Yuan Chia has just teamed up with hotpot chains and a supermarket group to put Guatemalan shrimp on menus and shelves nationwide.

Outlook: Expect more Guatemalan shrimp in Taiwanese stores and restaurants through the September-to-November seafood push, with trade between the two allies likely to keep growing.
