• She has been recovering from a stroke for years, uses a wheelchair, and has a caregiver, but is otherwise doing well.
• He never formally told her he was running, and wants both parents left alone to enjoy a quiet life away from politics.
• His father, former lawmaker Chen Chao-jung, has said he will stay out of the race entirely.

Outlook: The campaign will run without the family's political machine behind it, leaving Chen to lean on his own four-term record in Changhua.
