TSMC leads Taiwan's US-investment boom as Formosa Plastics swings to profit

Sep 04, 2026

Taiwan's biggest companies are making serious money from their American operations, which is good news for their shareholders and for Trump's push to bring factories to the US.

  • TSMC is the standout winner, with US profits jumping more than fivefold in the first half of the year, driven almost entirely by its Arizona plant.
  • TSMC also has by far the largest pile of money invested in US subsidiaries, and it added the most new investment over the past year and a half.
  • Formosa Plastics flipped from a loss to a profit in its US business as petrochemical margins bottomed out and started recovering.
  • Server and electronics makers Wiwynn and Wistron doubled their US investments, while steel firm Ta Chen and chip-equipment engineer Hantang saw profits surge on TSMC-related work.
  • The winners cluster in four areas: chips and supply-chain engineering, AI servers and contract manufacturing, biotech, and old-line industry plus finance.

Outlook: With Arizona production ramping and more capital heading west, Taiwan's US-exposed companies look set to keep posting stronger American earnings.
