Hualien's race for county chief has turned into an unusually tight three-way contest, and none of the front-runners can count on winning.

• Four candidates registered, but the real fight is between Yu Shu-chen, Chang Chun and Wei Chia-hsien — all three come from the KMT-leaning camp.
• The KMT's Yu Shu-chen leads slightly, backed by party machinery and strong support among Indigenous voters, but anger at party heavyweight Fu Kun-chi is turning that backing into a liability.
• Chang Chun, the current county council speaker, runs as an independent and is favored by recall activists and some local pro-DPP figures — full DPP backing would lift his odds sharply.
• Wei Chia-hsien brings deep family roots, decades of local ties on both sides of the political divide, and a brother serving as Hualien city mayor.
• The DPP has not fielded a candidate, so more than a third of undecided middle-ground voters will likely decide the outcome.

Outlook: Expect the race to sharpen as the DPP decides whether to back a candidate and an anti-Fu alliance takes shape.
