Unimicron falls under heavy fund selling as it defends the NT$900 level
Taiwan's stock market bounced back hard on Friday, but chip substrate maker Unimicron went the other way — bad news for its 280,000-plus shareholders.
- The main index jumped nearly 700 points as tech, financial, and traditional stocks all rose together.
- Unimicron fell for a second straight day, dropping about 7% from NT$973 to just above NT$900.
- Local investment trust funds were the culprit, selling the stock for a fourth day in a row and dumping over 4,400 lots on Friday alone.
- Trading volume ballooned to more than 40,000 lots, a sign that big holders are heading for the exit.
- Memory and chip names took similar hits, with Winbond, Nanya Technology, and Macronix also near the top of the funds' sell list.
Outlook: If the funds keep selling, Unimicron looks set to lose its grip on the NT$900 line in the coming sessions.
