A police information officer in Taoyuan has been charged with secretly running a company that won city police contracts and with helping build software for an illegal online casino — bad news for public trust in Taiwan's police and investigation bureau.

• Officer Hsu Meng-wei is accused of hiding his control of an IT company that won 14 police purchasing contracts he himself handled between 2016 and 2019, making over NT$100 million.
• He also worked with an investigator from the Investigation Bureau, Hung Ching-yu, to write gambling software used to run an online baccarat site.
• Prosecutors say he used his job managing police servers to set up remote access through the police system for the gambling operators.
• A police cybersecurity staffer, Kao Chia-hung, allegedly signed off on his own inspection of Hsu's contract work and took NT$2.16 million in "consulting" fees.
• The money was hidden through homes and cars bought in other people's names, and payments disguised as a "scholarship."

Outlook: Prosecutors want more than ten years in prison for Hsu and full seizure of the illegal profits, while the Taoyuan police insist the gambling site ran on rented overseas cloud servers and their own systems were not compromised.
