KMT members in Taichung register to run without leaving the party

Five Kuomintang members in Taichung who were passed over for the party's nomination are running for city council anyway, and two of them are refusing to quit the party even though it means punishment.

  • The KMT nominated 34 candidates for Taichung's city council race, but five members who missed out are running regardless.
  • Three of them quit the party before registering; former Taichung KMT deputy chair Chang Shu-hua and newcomer Chou Chi-yang did not.
  • Both say they feel attached to the party and will not leave on their own, and will accept whatever discipline follows.
  • Chang points to his work for the party during the DPP's mass recall push and says he kept quiet and waited for a chance that never came.

Outlook: The KMT now has to decide whether to expel two loyalists who defied its nomination, with registration closed and the campaign under way.
