Taiwan's Hualien county magistrate race has taken an unexpected turn, and the Fu Kun-chi machine that has long dominated local politics may face its first genuine threat — good news for the anti-Fu camp, bad news for the Fu family.

• The Fu faction's high point came in 2022; in the two hard-fought elections since then, its vote has fallen to just over 60,000.
• This time it is not a straight blue-versus-green contest: Yu Shu-chen, Chang Chun and Wei Chia-hsien all have pan-blue backgrounds, and will take votes from the Fu faction's base.
• Last year's mass recall drive left behind nearly 50,000 votes explicitly declaring "no to Fu Kun-chi", and these are the key to who wins.
• Those votes are likely to consolidate behind a single candidate in the final stage, and at present Chang Chun looks best placed to pick them up.
• If the Fu faction slips to just over 50,000 while the anti-Fu vote breaks past 50,000, the two lines will cross.

Outlook: with less than three months to go before the nine-in-one elections, the key questions are how many blue-camp votes Wei Chia-hsien can peel away, and whether anti-Fu voters ultimately converge on one candidate.
