A rumored Taiwan People's Party (TPP) run for Changhua county magistrate is off, easing one pressure point in the party's soured alliance talks with the KMT.

• Lai Yin-chu, deputy head of the TPP's Changhua branch, said he will not register for the race, one day before the deadline.
• He will focus on a think tank instead and help the party's local council and township candidates win.
• TPP chairman Huang Kuo-chang still leads a joint registration in Changhua with 5 county council candidates and 13 township representative candidates.
• The move follows the collapse of KMT–TPP cooperation talks, which blew up over the Zhubei mayor race after the TPP said the KMT broke a promise to stand aside.
• Political watchers suspect the Changhua magistrate talk was a bargaining chip all along, floated to squeeze the KMT and dropped once it had served its purpose.
