Taichung tax office auditor and two accountants detained in bribery case

Sep 03, 2026

Taiwan's tax agency has a corruption scandal on its hands, and it is bad news for public trust in how business taxes get assessed.

  • A senior auditor at the Central Taiwan branch of the National Taxation Bureau is accused of taking bribes from business owners.
  • Prosecutors in Taichung detained the auditor and two accountants after a judge approved the requests.
  • Investigators ran six rounds of searches between May and August and seized tens of millions of Taiwan dollars in cash and gift vouchers.
  • The tax bureau says it spotted the irregularities itself and referred the case to prosecutors, then suspended the auditor and cancelled his pending retirement.

Outlook: The investigation is still open, and more people tied to the bribery ring could be charged.
