Fifth candidate registers for Chiayi City mayor race

Sep 03, 2026

Taiwan's 2026 local election race in Chiayi City is filling up, with an independent political newcomer joining a field that now spans all the main parties.

  • A 66-year-old independent, Wang Yi-cheng, registered on the fourth day of candidate sign-ups, saying he wants to help people in need.
  • He came to the election commission alone, listed no education background, and named only two books he has written.
  • Five candidates are now in the race, including the DPP's Wang Mei-hui and the TPP's Chang Chi-kai, who is backed jointly by the blue and white camps.
  • The rest of the field is independent, including a former head of Taipei National University of the Arts.

Outlook: More registrations are possible before sign-ups close, but the real contest looks set to be between the DPP candidate and the opposition-backed challenger.
