Cheng Li-wun accompanies Hsu Hsin-ying to register her candidacy; former county magistrate Fan Chen-tsung berates her on the spot

KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun was publicly criticised by a former county magistrate while accompanying the party's candidate for Hsinchu County magistrate to register, bad news for the Blue camp's morale ahead of the election.

  • Fan Chen-tsung told Cheng Li-wun to her face that the failure of the Blue-White alliance was a strategic error, and that if the party loses Hsinchu County she will be the biggest culprit.
  • He also questioned how rarely Cheng Li-wun had visited Hsinchu in the past, and the host's attempt to smooth things over only made the atmosphere more awkward.
  • The core problem is that internal coordination within the KMT has not gone smoothly, while talks on cooperation with the Taiwan People's Party have also failed to reach agreement.
  • Some within the Blue camp also believe that the less said by Cheng Li-wun, Han Kuo-yu and several other leading figures, the better the prospects for a change of ruling party.

Outlook: With the registration deadline approaching, whether the Blue and White camps can reach a deal on cooperation before the nine-in-one elections at the end of the year will determine the outcome in Hsinchu and other key counties and cities.
