DPP legislator Wang Mei-hui has formally registered to run for mayor of Chiayi City, while playing down a debate challenge from her opponent Chang Chi-kai. For Chiayi voters, the race for mayor has now officially begun.

• Wang completed her registration accompanied by supporters and several city councillors, declaring "2026, we will win."
• Responding to an invitation to a public debate from former Taiwan People's Party legislator Chang Chi-kai, she said debate arrangements are not for her opponent to decide, and that the Election Commission's planning should be respected.
• Her platform focuses on care across all ages, including increased funding for school lunches, a children's library, community sports facilities, and a gradual relaxation of eligibility for health insurance premium and denture subsidies.
• She stressed the need to seize the industrial dividend brought by TSMC's arrival and to develop alongside Chiayi County.
• On the question of a light rail line at the Chiayi high-speed rail station, she said there is demand but the matter should be left to the professionals, with priority given to improving shuttle services between the station area and the city centre.

Outlook: The campaign has formally entered the post-registration phase of direct contest. Whether an officially organised debate takes place will be decided by the Election Commission, and the TSMC effect and transport infrastructure are likely to become the main points of contention.
