Taoyuan council candidates register: 13 KMT incumbents file together, independent Li Kai-lun joins race

Sep 02, 2026

Taoyuan's city council election registration is drawing established party slates and a new generation of political families, a routine but telling sign of how entrenched local power is being passed along.

  • Thirteen sitting KMT city councillors registered for re-election as a bloc, escorted by three KMT lawmakers.
  • The group rallied behind Mayor Chang San-cheng, chanting slogans for a clean sweep at the ballot box.
  • The DPP registered separately, led by its mayoral candidate Huang Shih-chieh.
  • Newcomer Li Kai-lun is running as an independent in the first district, accompanied by his father, deputy speaker Li Hsiao-chung, in an open display of handing over the family seat.

Outlook: Registration closes shortly, setting up a contest where KMT incumbency and family succession will be tested against the DPP's citywide push.
