Taiwan trade delegation meets Saudi billionaire Prince Al-Waleed on tech and investment
Taiwan's trade office is courting Saudi money, and the tone was positive for Taiwan's tech industry and its property market.
- Taiwan External Trade Development Council chairman James Huang met Saudi Arabia's richest man, Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, to talk about the global economy and tech investment.
- Al-Waleed has been putting more money into high tech, and his early bet on SpaceX paid off well.
- He praised Taiwan's recent economic and tech performance and said he sees room to grow in the Taiwanese market.
- His Four Seasons hotel group is building a Four Seasons in Taipei, due to open next year — a sign that luxury operators like what they see in Taiwan.
- Two weeks earlier the same delegation was in South Korea, where the government is pushing "sovereign AI" to stay independent of both the US and China — the same push now showing up in Saudi Arabia.
Outlook: Expect more Gulf and Asian money to chase Taiwan's chip and AI supply chain as countries race to own their own computing power.
