Su Chiao-hui registered her candidacy for mayor of New Taipei City together with 36 city council candidates, declaring that New Taipei no longer needs to serve as a satellite city of Taipei. The race is currently deadlocked with the Kuomintang's Li Si-chuan.

• Campaigning under the slogan "from satellite to constellation," Su Chiao-hui is pushing for New Taipei to shed its subordinate status to Taipei and become a leading player in its own right.
• She has pledged to establish an urban renewal bureau to speed up the redevelopment of older districts, and to make urban and rural development more balanced while upgrading local industry.
• Polling shows a tight contest: a survey by the Trust Citizen Association put Su Chiao-hui narrowly ahead of Li Si-chuan for the first time, though the gap was within the margin of error; another projection still had Li Si-chuan in front, but by a markedly narrower margin.
• Li Si-chuan has brought in incumbent mayor Hou Yu-ih to anchor his campaign headquarters, while Su Chiao-hui has instead publicly praised Hou Yu-ih's record in office — both sides are competing for the same pool of swing voters.
• Former president Tsai Ing-wen personally accompanied Taipei mayoral candidate Puma Shen to register, but did not attend Su Chiao-hui's event.

Outlook: With 90 days left before the nine-in-one local elections, New Taipei may prove the most closely fought race in Taiwan, with both sides set to keep battling over urban renewal, infrastructure and Hou Yu-ih's record.
