Pingtung and Kagoshima councils deepen exchange ties

Sep 02, 2026

A Japanese prefectural delegation visited southern Taiwan to build on a local-government partnership, a small but steady sign of warming Taiwan-Japan ties at the regional level.

  • A Kagoshima prefectural assembly committee on overseas economic exchange, led by Ito Hiroki, visited the Pingtung County Council.
  • Pingtung's council speaker Chou Tien-lun and deputy speaker Lu Wen-jui hosted, joined by members of the Taiwan-Japan friendship caucus.
  • Both sides pitch the match as natural — sunny southern coastal regions with strong farming and fishing industries.
  • Talks focused on the economy, culture, local governance and industry, with a banquet in Donggang for the visitors.
  • The trip returns a visit Pingtung councillors made to Kagoshima in May.

Outlook: Expect more council-level swaps and possible cooperation deals on farming, fishing and tourism between the two regions.
