Kuomintang Nantou County Magistrate Hsu Shu-hua has completed her registration for the year-end election, setting up a one-on-one Blue-Green contest with the Democratic Progressive Party's Wen Shih-cheng, in a race both parties see as a must-win.

• Incumbent magistrate Hsu Shu-hua completed her registration on September 2, while Wen Shih-cheng got in first by registering on August 31.
• The two are alumni of Yenfeng Elementary School and Caotun Junior High School in Caotun, with Wen the senior and Hsu the junior — a connection that has become a talking point in the campaign.
• Wen Shih-cheng has publicly called for policy debate in place of smears and personal attacks, campaigning on a platform of reasoned competition.
• There is currently no sign of a third candidate entering the race, leaving Nantou a straightforward one-on-one Blue-Green contest.

Outlook: The campaign is expected to centre on platforms for local development, though whether both sides can hold to their pledge to avoid negative campaigning remains to be seen.
