Huang Shih-chieh registers his candidacy for Taoyuan mayor at the head of "Team Taoyuan"

Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party is playing the unity card in the Taoyuan mayoral race, putting pressure on the incumbent Kuomintang city government and offering good news to Taoyuan residents hoping to see stalled construction projects restarted.

  • Huang Shih-chieh completed his registration as a candidate, campaigning alongside the party's city councillor candidates as a combined "Team Taoyuan," and set off on a motorcade street canvass immediately after registering.
  • His main line of attack is that the current city government has spun its wheels for three years, singling out TSMC's arrival, the Asia Silicon Valley initiative, the Zhongli sports park and several MRT projects as stuck and going nowhere.
  • His platform focuses on social welfare, childcare, education and transport, along with building a municipal hospital, filling gaps in cancer and long-term care resources, and securing a second medical centre for Taoyuan.
  • He casts Taoyuan as the nation's gateway city, aiming to use the semiconductor, drone and defence industry supply chains to create local jobs for residents.
  • He also called for a constructive debate with his opponent, so that voters can judge for themselves.

Outlook: The campaign has entered the phase of direct confrontation that follows registration, and municipal gridlock and the progress of major construction projects will be the main battleground ahead.
