A former reporter is now the Democratic Progressive Party's candidate for mayor of Taibao in Chiayi County, setting up a local race in Taiwan's year-end elections.

  • Lu Hui-yu registered her candidacy and marked it with a 12-hour bike ride through all 18 of the city's villages.
  • She previously worked as a reporter and as a deputy office director for lawmaker Tsai Yi-yu, who is himself running for Chiayi County magistrate.
  • County magistrate Weng Chang-liang and other party figures joined her at registration, showing the DPP is backing her.
  • Her platform covers roads and parks, childcare subsidies, English education, elder care, and turning the high-speed rail station into a bigger transport hub.
  • She also wants a local farm-produce brand and cheaper production costs for farmers facing labor shortages.

Outlook: The campaign now moves into its formal stage ahead of Taiwan's year-end local elections, with the DPP hoping the Chiayi ticket holds together from the county race down to Taibao.
