Taiwan's Yilan county magistrate race is turning into a four-way contest, an unexpected twist for a seat most people assumed would be a straight fight between the two big parties.

• Two independents have registered, breaking the expected KMT-versus-DPP matchup.
• One is a 52-year-old tech engineer who recently moved to Yilan and has no political background; he chose not to make his platform public.
• The other is a 63-year-old local man from Yuanshan who has run for local office before and lost a county council by-election in 2024 by 58 votes.
• The KMT's Wu Tsung-hsien registered this morning; the DPP's Lin Kuo-chang is set to register tomorrow.
• Across the whole county, 71 people signed up on the first day, mostly for council, township representative, and village chief seats.

Outlook: More candidates could still register before the deadline, but the two independents are long shots who mainly add noise to the main party contest.
