Taiwan stocks open sharply higher as MediaTek hits limit up

Aug 31, 2026

Taiwan's stock market jumped at the open, a strong start for local investors even as Wall Street sold off on renewed US-Iran fighting.

  • MediaTek surged to its daily limit after Nvidia put a huge sum into the chip designer, dragging the whole market up.
  • The Taiwan index opened higher and kept climbing, gaining more than 500 points to move above 46,600.
  • Chip design, silicon IP, chip packaging, optoelectronics and other electronics stocks led the way, with cement, textiles, plastics and financials joining in.
  • The mood was very different in the US, where the main indexes mostly fell on Monday and only the chip index closed up.
  • US and Iran traded attacks again after a month-long lull, pushing oil prices up and raising worries that inflation will get worse.

Outlook: Taiwan's chip stocks look set to keep leading while the Middle East fighting keeps pressure on oil and global markets.
