Taipei's local election registration turned frosty as two rival candidates in the Neihu-Nangang district crossed paths without a word, a small sign of how tense the race is getting.

• KMT candidate Chen Kuan-an registered with lawmaker Lee Yen-hsiu at his side, and DPP candidate Kao Chia-yu arrived moments later.
• The two camps passed each other twice at the registration desk with no nod, no greeting, and no eye contact.
• Kao did not tell reporters in advance she was registering, but posed cheerfully for cameras once there.
• The Taiwan People's Party held a rally with Ko Wen-je and Huang Kuo-chang, but nobody from the party registered — they judged the day unlucky.
• An independent candidate from the Da'an-Wenshan district shook hands warmly with Kao, a contrast to the chill between the main parties.

Outlook: Expect the Neihu-Nangang seat to become one of Taipei's more personal fights as campaigning ramps up ahead of the local elections.
