Taiwan's Minister of Labor Hung Sun-han will travel to Nanjing, China, to attend an APEC ministerial meeting. The Kuomintang has taken a positive view of the trip, while criticising the Democratic Progressive Party for applying inconsistent standards.

• Hung is one of the few ministerial-level officials under the DPP administration to be permitted to attend an international event in China.
• Chen I-hsin, director of the KMT's Culture and Communications Committee, said the party supports Taiwan's participation in international organisations and also hopes to see cross-strait exchanges return to normal.
• The KMT said the DPP has in the past framed visits to China by ordinary members of the public, young people and local governments as a risk, imposing layer upon layer of restrictions.
• Now that one of its own ministers is going to Nanjing for a meeting, it has changed its tune and become encouraging — which critics call a double standard.

Outlook: The trip will serve as an indicator of whether cross-strait interaction can thaw slightly, and it will continue to be used by the opposition as material for attacking the DPP.
