The Kuomintang has put forward a young new face in New Taipei: Teng Kai-hsun has formally registered as a candidate for city councillor in Banqiao District, campaigning on the promise to speak up for the younger generation.

  • Teng Kai-hsun completed his registration at the New Taipei City Election Commission, accompanied by legislator Hsu Yu-chen.
  • He is a protégé of former KMT chairman Chu Li-luan, and has served as executive director of the KMT Youth League, spokesperson for the party's central headquarters, and a legislative assistant.
  • He said he comes from no distinguished family background and has worked his way up from the grassroots, and that he wants to secure more budget funding and public works for Banqiao.
  • Fellow party members have cast him as a new-generation "heartthrob," stressing his ability to bridge older and younger voters.
  • The KMT hopes he will pair with New Taipei mayoral candidate Lee Si-chuan to boost the party's prospects in Banqiao, a core district of New Taipei.

Outlook: With the campaign now in its registration phase, the KMT is expected to give its young candidates greater exposure, and the Banqiao constituency will be a key battleground in the New Taipei City council elections.
