Chang San-cheng Sends Representatives to Register Candidacy; Huang Shih-chieh to Lead "Taoyuan Team" in Registering Tomorrow

Aug 31, 2026

The race for Taoyuan mayor has officially begun, with the Kuomintang and Democratic Progressive Party candidates handling their candidacy registrations in starkly different ways, reflecting their respective campaign strategies.

  • Incumbent KMT Mayor Chang San-cheng, who is seeking re-election, did not appear in person, instead delegating the registration to campaign headquarters chairman Huang Min-kung and Legislator Tu Chuan-chi.
  • Chang's team stressed that city governance comes first, treating the registration as a purely administrative procedure so that the election does not crowd out municipal work.
  • DPP candidate Huang Shih-chieh has opted for a high-profile approach, registering tomorrow accompanied by a "Taoyuan Team" made up of city councillors and council candidates, followed immediately by a motorcade sweep through the streets.
  • Huang will simultaneously deliver a campaign address aimed at the city's thirteen administrative districts, along with a new round of policy proposals centred on listening to local needs.
  • Tu Chuan-chi, who registered on Chang's behalf, is the very person who defeated Huang Shih-chieh by just over a thousand votes in the last legislative election, extending the rivalry between the two into the mayoral race.

Looking ahead: registration closes on September 4, and the Taoyuan campaign is expected to centre on contention over major infrastructure projects such as phase three of the Longtan Science Park development.
