Sensory-friendly spaces expand to all 10 UH campuses

Aug 31, 2026

The University of Hawaii is rolling out quiet, calming rooms and portable sensory kits across every campus, a small but real win for students who struggle with stress and noise.

  • Sensory spaces, which started at UH Manoa two years ago, are now going system-wide to all 10 campuses.
  • Each campus gets a portable sensory kit so students can calm down and get back to class more focused.
  • The project comes out of UH Manoa's Center on Disability Studies through its Camp Plus U program.
  • Students and staff who used the rooms reported less stress, anxiety and frustration, plus better focus and a stronger sense of belonging.

Outlook: With early results looking good, expect the kits and quiet rooms to become a standard part of student support across the UH system.
