Huang Yu-fen Considers Leaving the KMT to Run for Changhua City Mayor

Aug 30, 2026

One of the Huang sisters in Changhua politics is now confirmed to be entering the year-end election, which is bad news for the candidate already nominated by the Kuomintang (KMT) and potentially an opportunity for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

  • Former county councillor Huang Yu-fen is weighing leaving the party to run for Changhua City mayor for a third time.
  • Only one of the two — she or her elder sister Huang Yu-ju — will register, and the final decision will come within the next day or two.
  • The KMT has already nominated Chen Wen-pin, chair of the Changhua City Council; if Huang Yu-fen runs, she must first leave the party.
  • Should Huang Yu-fen enter the race, the Changhua City mayoral contest would become a three-way fight between the KMT, the DPP and an independent.
  • In her two previous runs she won more than 37,000 votes and more than 39,000 votes respectively — her vote share rose rather than fell.

Outlook: The outcome revealed in the next day or two will determine whether the Changhua City mayoral race is a two-way showdown or a three-way contest.
