Taiwan's government is warning that travel to China is getting more dangerous, especially for anyone with a past in politics or human rights work.

• A Taiwanese man on a business trip was pulled aside at Shanghai customs, taken to a closed room, and questioned for six hours by three plainclothes officers.
• His only offense: a part-time job at Amnesty International after college.
• Officers made him unlock his phone and went through his photos, email, LINE and WhatsApp chats, asking who funded the group and which politicians he knew.
• He downplayed the work, said he had quit, gave up on entering China, and was allowed to fly home.
• Taipei says China has jailed people years later for political activity they had long since left behind.

Outlook: New Chinese entry and exit rules take effect September 15, and Taiwan is urging high-risk travelers to reconsider the trip and register their travel plans first.
