Taiwan stocks jump past 46,000 as chipmakers surge
Taiwan's stock market opened sharply higher and blew past the 46,000 mark, a strong day for anyone holding Taiwanese tech shares.
- The index jumped nearly 600 points to about 46,563, lifted by chip stocks.
- TSMC, UMC, MediaTek and Nanya Technology all rose from the open.
- The trigger was Nvidia's strong earnings and revenue forecast, which sent its shares up almost 9% and lifted all four main US indices.
- TSMC's US-listed shares gained over 2%, and the Philadelphia semiconductor index rose more than 2%.
- The rally spread beyond chips into optoelectronics, electronic parts, machinery, plastics and financial stocks.
Outlook: Nvidia's forecast keeps the AI trade alive, so Taiwanese chip stocks should stay well supported in the near term.
