Aug 28, 2026

Ocean freight rates are climbing again, which is good for shipping lines but a rising cost for importers.

  • The main Shanghai export shipping rate index rose for a fifth week in a row, up about 3%.
  • Rates from Asia to the US East Coast broke above $10,000 per large container for the first time in this run.
  • The US West Coast route also gained, while Southeast Asia routes jumped the most at over 9%.
  • Europe and Mediterranean routes went the other way, falling around 4% to 6%.

Outlook: US-bound rates look set to stay firm in the near term, while European lanes keep softening.
