Fire at Vanguard Semiconductor's Taoyuan wafer plant forces evacuation of 200 workers

Aug 27, 2026

A late-night fire broke out at chipmaker Vanguard International Semiconductor's third wafer plant in Taoyuan, Taiwan — bad news for the company, though nobody was hurt.

  • The fire started in a rooftop equipment room of a four-story building at the Luzhu plant late on 27 August.
  • Firefighters put it out within an hour; the burned area was small.
  • The company evacuated more than 200 workers who were on site and counted heads — no injuries or people trapped.
  • The plant makes 8-inch wafers and specialty chips, so any damage could ripple into chip supply.
  • The cause of the fire and the size of the losses are still unclear.

Outlook: Vanguard will have to say soon whether production at the plant is disrupted, which is what chip customers and investors will watch.
