Taiwanese pro-localisation groups are using the 75th anniversary of the signing of the San Francisco Peace Treaty to put the idea that "Taiwan's sovereignty belongs to the people of Taiwan" back on the table — a direct challenge to Beijing's sovereignty claims.

• The Taiwan National Alliance will hold a symposium on 5 September on the theme of using international law to defend Taiwan's distinct identity.
• The core argument is that under the treaty Japan renounced Taiwan but did not hand it over to any state, so sovereignty rests with the island's 23 million people.
• Yao Chia-wen, a senior adviser to the President, said that when the Kuomintang was in power it deliberately spoke only of the Cairo Declaration and never of the San Francisco Peace Treaty, and that China now uses the same line.
• The demands also include revising official holiday designations that are inconsistent with this sovereignty position — for example, that 10 October should not be treated as Taiwan's national day, and that 25 October is not Retrocession Day.
• The argument likens Taiwan to India, Indonesia and Vietnam, which emerged from colonial rule after the war, stressing that independence is a natural outcome and there is no need to ask whom the territory belongs to.

Outlook: September's commemorative events are expected to reignite the dispute over Taiwan's sovereign status and to draw a backlash from Beijing.
